PATEA BEACH IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY
ENTHUSIASTIC ANNUAL MEETING MUCH PROGRESS SHOWN (Own Correspondent). PATEA, Oct. 27. New improvements have apparently created greater enthusiasm tor the Beach Improvement Society if the enthusiastic annual meeting on Thursday was evidence. A credit balance of £l2 Ils Id was shown in the bal-ance-sheet with assets over liabilities amounting to £587 Is Id. The sum of £llB 19s was spent on beach improvements during the year. Speaking to the report and balancesheet, Mr. G. Broker congratulated tliocp who had been responsible for the improvements, which were a credit not only to the president, secretary, and committee, but to the society anti the town. It was pleasing that members had been so interested as to see the work carried out as it had been. Mr. F. Naismith complemented the president on the appearance of the beach. The president, in his report, stated that he thought he could say that the Patea beach was now the best on the West Coast. He trusted that the people would continue to support the society and enable them to carry on the good work. There was still much that could be done. The secretary, Mr. H. Boagey, in his report, stated that a very successful year had passed. There was a credit bank balance of £ll 13s 7d, which, considering circumstances was to be considered most satisfactory. Two gala days had been held during the year the net profits being nearly £6O. One hundred ngaios had been planted in different positions in order to get quick shelter and all these shrubs were doing well. Twelve Norfolk pines were also planted, six being donated by Messrs. Duncan and Davies, New Plymouth. The pavilion has been repaired, but will need re-roofing in the near future. ■•The society also greatly appreciates the six donors of seats,” continues the report, ‘’and as we require still more to complete the frontage further donations would be gratefully received. •'The greatest achievement of the year has oeen the erection of a swimming and paddling pool, ’i nis has been maar possible by me decision of the centennial committee to erect this pool as a centennial memorial, and me sue.ciy are both proud and grateful for this gift-” The secretary paid tribute to the work of Mr. Pcacocke, the president. The thanks of the society were uue to the Suri Ciuo for tne wonderful assistance given in running dilfercnt functions, rhe Borough Council, Harbour Board, the Unemployment Board and all others who had so ungrudgingly given their assistance financially and otherwise. Bates, T. Mairs, r. Naismith, A. A. Gillon, G. Corbett, G. Broker; auditor, Mr. H. W. Austin. The appointment of a caretaker was left to the executive. Subscriptions were fixed at 2s 6d, It was decided that Scouts be allowed to camp free at the beach providing they were under proper control. Appreciation of the secretary’s services during the past year was recorded, ft w-as uccideu to hold the annual gala day on New Year’s Day, the proceeds to be handed over to the Centennial Committee for the purpose of liquidating the debt on the baths. The executive were recommended to d.ivise soi/.c scheme for collection of donations from visitors to the beach. Mr. H. W. Austin explained that the road to the beach would he tar sealed in November. The council had. received authority from the Main Highways Board some time ago Io go on with the sealing and then it had been cancelled. The council applied again this year and had been given the I monetary authority provider, the work was not commenced until November. Clarke, a former resident of the beach, wrote expressing approrial ion I hat the baths project was being carried out, and it was decided to send him a letter of thanks foi his past assistance to the society.
