IMPORTATION RESENTED TO BE BOYCOTTED BY CHINESE FRUITERERS ( Pet Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 16. ' Strong resentment has been rou.s- . ed among the Chinese commun'd} throughout New Zealand by a decision to import Japanese onions The shipment, stated to comprise 700 SOU tons, has been ordered by the Government and is due to arrive at Auckland later this month by the . Naniwa Maru. Chinese fruiterers ■ throughout the Dominion have decided to boycott the onions and in this stand they arc supported by a large . section ol European members of tne trade. Feeling rose high when the ■ matter was discussed at a recent meeting of fruiterers, one of the largest ever held in Auckland, and although only a few Chinese were present criticism of the Government's action was g - neral. Several members of the trade approached were of the opinion that tne ooycott would be supported by many ! European and all Chinese in the retail fruit business. One leading fruiterer said that even if he stocked Japanese onions he did not expect the public would buy in view of tne present attitude of Japan to Britain wnicn had roused feeling throughout the Empire.
