81 YEARS OLD
MR. WILLIAM BROWN. Mr. William Brow.n, of Wanganui, celebrated his 81st. birthday yesterday. Mr. Brown, who came to Wanganui in 1887, has recollections of the old industrial England. In his youth long hours were worked in the factories and the privileges and facilities enjoyed by workers to-day did not exist. Boys and girls were know>n as “half timers” because they worked in tne factories for half a day and spent the rest of their time at school. When they reached the age of 13 years, however, they became full-time workers. Mr. Brown has a vivid recollection of many of the great English statesmen including Parnell and Gladstone and can remember seeing Gladstone enter the House of Commons on the nicht he introduced the Home Rule Bill. For many years, Mr. Brown was employed by Sclanders and Co. in Taupo Quay, whose business was later purchased by Levin and Co., Ltd. Mr. Brown was etnployed by Levin and Co. also for a number of years.
