THE EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA I ■ I RIVAL SOCIAL AMBITIONS. Received May 15, 5.5 p.m. QUEBEC, May 14. e The special correspondent of the r ‘ Australian Associated Press on board n the Empress of Australia reported by t' radio that at 3 p.m. (E.S.T.) the liner '< was proceeding at full steam ahead. E It is estimated here that the pos>- 3 tion was then 1000 miles from Que- 0 bee. She is not expected to arrive be- c fore 5 p.m. (E.S.T.) on Wednesday. e Local citizens who had drilled for 1 days for their part in the reception of Their Majesties were greatly disap- 0 pointed when it was announced that ® the ship would be a day late, but the 1 disappointment was greatly mitigated '■ when it was learned that the Ottawa ® programme was the only one likely to c be cut. In fact there was some grati- J fication that Ottawa was likely to t claim fewer shares in the proceedings. 1 It is no longer a secret that in J many quarters it is felt that (he f capital and officialdom are claiming c too large a share of the Royal at- 5 tention. Many people in social circles r felt that they had been edged out of ’ the banquet-room or drawing-room in s order to make room for politicians or their wives. This found open expression in a leader in the Chronicle Telegraph, Quebec’s only newspaper in | the English language, which deplored ( the influx of visitors from Ottawa to , Quebec, contending that since one of < the purposes of the Royal visit was to t permit Their Majesties to come into ] contact with as many of their subjects j as possible, it would be better if 1 Ottawa personages "reserve the grati- ] fication of their social ambitions" till > Their Majesties reach Ottawa. i HOTEL STAFF EATS ROYAL DINNER I FRESH SUi’f’LY OF CANADIAN DELICACIES. RUMOURS RUNNING WILD. Received May 15, 7.43 p.m. I QUEBEC, May 15. 1 The special correspondent of the , I Australian Associated Press says the staff of Chateau Frontenac to-night dined on choice trout intended lor Their Majesties and 250 guests at the official luncheon to-morrow, while orders were hurriedly telegraphed to secure a fresh supply ot Canadian I delicacies. Thousands of snow birds, i however, are safe on the ice. These i migratory birds, the size of sparrows, 1 can only be procured in April. They • were to be a highlight of the lun- | I cheon. Four breasts embalmed m i jelly are required for each portion. : ) The hotels are contented, however, as | : Quebec is jammed with waiting visiI tors. 1 Rumours are running wild but it is 1 officially denied that the delay is due ' to either the King’s illness, the inter--1 national situation, or the presence of i ' a submarine off the coast. The latter ' rumour gained currency because of ' the operations of minesweepers oft ’ Nova Scotia since a foreign submarine ' was reported off Mount Halifax har--1 bour three weeks ago. Bulletins posted to-night state that . the Empress of Australia may arrive j on Wednsday morning, but it is re- j garded as doubtful. The Government has decided to withhold further announcements concerning changes in the Royal tour plans until it is more definitely established when the liner will reach Quebec. There has been talk of Their Majesties' visit to Ottawa baling re- ; duced by two days, but there is no j confirmation of this. Since all changes must be wirelessed to Their Majesties for approval, a final decision ' is unlikely before to-morrow.
