PARTS OF CIRCULAR SAW FLUNG THROUGH AIR. PORTION EMBEDDED IN TREE. (Own Correspondent). TAIHAPE, May 15. Catapulting through the air like a shot from a gun, a large portion of a i circular saw passed over the secondary department of the Taihape District High School yesterday afternoon and became embedded in a pine tree near the entrance to the Recreation. Ground while the remaining part of the saw landed in the lawn in front, of a house in Carver Street. Mr. O. McSweeney was using a circular saw to cut firewood in the backyard of his mother’s residence in Hui Street, when the saw broke into two piece's, one piece flying through the air in the direction of the Oval Domain, while the other piece landed in , the front lawn of Mr. Howe’s resi- i deuce in Carver Street. The fact that parts of the saw were found so far from the scene of the mishap gives some idea of the speed at which the saw left the bench. The bigger part of the broken saw was ’ found firmly embedded in the third pine tree from the main gate giving access to the Oval Domain. The saw struck the tree ten inches from the ground and stuck fast. Fortunately, nobody was hurt by the flying missile though there were several people about at the time, one man being in the act of entering the gate. Part of | the saw bench landed near Mr. A. B. ! Swedlund’s house. The saw was , r about 3ft. 6ins. in diameter. r TAIHAPE POPPY DAY SALES k The final returns in connection with l a the recent Poppy Day appeal are now L to hand, and reveal that the total sales amounted to the record sum of £74 9s 6d compared with £64 0s 6d last j year, which constituted the previous j record. c TWO FALSE ALARMS.
