EXCITEMENT COLT

RICCARTON TRAINER’S PURCHASE The Excitement—Calcite colt, who was bought at the recent Sydney sales for 200 guineas on behalf of the Riccarton trainer, F. D. Jones, arrived recently and he is now in the quarters from which he will be raced. More than usual interest attaches to this colt, as the dam (Calcite) was formerly trained by Jones. Calcite is an imported mare by Rock Flint (son of Rock Sand) from Milanaise, by Marco from Gallymawfy, by Gallimak. This is a family that has done well in England in recent times. One of its noted members is the Blandford horse Trigo, winner of the Derby and St. Leger; and another, Harinero, a brother to Trigo, won the Irish Derby, and is now at the stud in Australia, where his yearlings sold well at the recent Sydney sales. Calcite, imported to New Zealand in 1922, was trained by Jones for the late Mr H. A. Knight. She raced in only two seasons. In the first, when a four-year-old, she won a maiden event at Oamaru and was placej twice, and in the following season she started five times, being placed on each occasion, including second in the Dunedin President’s Handicap and second in the Peninsula Cup. At the stud she has already got Metalurgy. winner of the Bendigo Cup and second in the V.R.C. St. Leger. Excitement, the sire of the colt, is a Hurry On horse that has already left many good winners in Australia, his progeny being endowed with brilliant speed and stamina as well Jones’ colt may thus develop into rt smart candidate for early two-year-old raises.
