ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

FOXTON CANDIDATES YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS (Special to “Chronicle.") PALMERSTON N., May 24. With the course proper open and the horses permitted to gallop against the rails, the programme at Awapuni yesterday morning was interesting and chief interest was centered in the horses with engagements at Foxton. The going was slow and inclined to be greasy for there was a light shower just before the galloping started. The Sigma filly (1. Howe) and the Beilina filly (Pratt) slipped over half a mile in 53 4-5 after a comparatively slow beginning, and they were followed by Porotiti (B. Brown) and Hirangi (S. Anderson) who were companions over seven furlongs on the plough. Hirangi worked as if the race he had on Saturday had done him no harm and he was in front at the finish, the time being 1,35 the first five in 1.7 4-5. Prediction (G. R. Tattersail) moved very smoothly in a three-furlong flutter which occupied 37 2-5. It was a nice effort. The Crooner (B. Kowhai), lookin' 7 a picture, was out doing pace work and he gave the impressing that he would not have objected if he had been required to gallop. Old Surrey Goes Well. Old Surrey (Tattersall) and Taillight (S. Anderson) were sprinted six furlongs and after taking 39 for the first three they went on to complete in 1.19 4-5, Noisy Night (J. Chaplin) and High Peer (I. Howe) were on terms at the end of six furlongs, run in 1.21 taking 1.7 for the last five. Taumau (Kowhai) was worked over a round on the course proper, being speeded up for the last six which took him 1.22. Dainty Sue (Chaplin) was next and she cut six out in 1.20 4-5, goinonicely throughout. _ Puroto (Tattersall) was given a “pipe-opener'’ over a mile and her pace was deceptive for she looked to be doing only even time. Her time for the full distance was 1.53 and the last six took her 1.24 without anpreciable effort. Cusinier (H. Johnstone) was just in front of Merry Thought (Waddell) at the end of half a mile which took them 53 1-5, but the former got the better of the start. Quadroon (Bowden) was galloped seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5, the first five in 1.7 2-5, and he worked kindiv throughout. Power Chief (A. McDonald) gave Royal Limond, with a light boy up, a couple of seconds start in a gallop over a mile. P v oyal Limond maintained the advantage throughout, his time for the last seven being 1.35.’ Old Bill (Chaplin) and Selkirk (Tattersall) sprinted five in 1.6 2-5 the first three in 40 1-5, and the latter was in front at the finish. Merryman (Bowden) sprinted sixfurlongs in 1.20, the first five in 1-6 2-5, going well. One of the youngsters out exercising was a quality-looking colt by Defoe out of Aratulla (Arausio— Martulla), he is owned by Mr. L. H. Collinson and L. G. Morris, the latter having acquired a half interest. Morris has also acquired a half interest in Hunting Lore.
