FORDELL WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY The Fordell Women's Institute held a most successful meeting last Thursday, when its sixth birthday was celebrated. Mrs. Lee presided and extended a welcome to the many visitors present from neighbouring institutes. She welcomed Mesdames Gemmill arid Edwards as members. Apologies were received from Mrs. Shanks, federation president, and Mrs. Owles, Kaitoke. The matter of sending a delegate to the Dominion conference was discussed and it was decided that the institute should do so, Miss N. Christie being elected to act as delegate. The points competition prizes for last year were presented to the winners as follows:—Flower competitions: Miss Tilley 1, Mrs. Green 2, Mrs. Christie 3. General competitions: Mrs. R. Campbell and Miss N. Christie equal 1, Miss Hall 3. An entertaining programme was presented as follows:—Song, Mrs. R. Sutherland: vocal duets, Mesdames Aiken and R. Sutherland; elcoutionary items, Mrs. Askew; songs, Miss Bausfield, and sketches by the Institute Drama Circle, the players being Mrs. Lloyd, Misses Barnes, Lloyd, Bousfield and Tilley, and also Mr. T. Renshaw (the doctor). The competition, "Nursery Rhymes," was -won by Miss I. Howie and Mrs. Green was found to occupy the “lucky seat." When lighting the candles on the birthday cake, which she had made. Mrs. Duncan conveyed greetings from Mrs. Dale, former president. Mrs. Barnes, the oldest member, was called upon to blow out the candles, and Miss Hall, who had iced the cake, cut the first slice. Afternoon tea was served by the committee members. The points competitions were: Jam (three varieties). Miss Hall 1, Miss K. Sutherland 2. Miss N. Christie 3. Basket of flowers, Mrs. Christie 1, Mrs. Bruce 2, Miss Tilley 3. An enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. Hostesses for next month are Mesdames James Glasgow', Hickman, and Misses Hall, Tilley and N. Christie.
