SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY

A STIFF OPENING FOR THE SEASON Sevcn-a-side Rugby, with its fast, goal-to-goal movements, proves a good test of physical fitness. Some players regard it as a bit too stiff for the beginning of the season, but the answer to that is sharp and tb the point: Physical fitness is the real foundation of good Rugby, and even early in the season a hard game is better than a soft one. Some good play was seen on the racecourse on Saturday. A high westerly wind affected the fortunes of play a good deal, but it was surprising to see good players making little use of it and, at times, letting it beat them. Technical Old Boys fielded a firstclass team, and by defeating Kaierau B in the semi-final, really clinched a right to win the tournament. Kaierau’s B team was stronger than the A. Technical Old Boys win entitles the club to hold the Bijou Cup for the season. Results at a Glance. First Round: Technical Old Boys’ A 18, Pirates A 0; Wanganui and Old Boys B 3, Marist B 0; Wanganui and Old Boys’ A 11, Wave? ley A 9; Kaierau B 20, Technical Old Boys’ B 3. Second round: Technical Old Boys’ A beat Wanganui and Old Boys’ B by default (injuries to players caused the default); Kaierau B beat Wanganui and Old Boys’ A by 9 to 3; Waverley B beat Marist A by 11 to 1; Kaierau A beat Pirates B by 12 to 4. Semi-final: Technical Old Boys’ A beat Kaierau B by 11 to 7; Kaierau A beat Waverley B by 8 to 5. Final: Technical Old Boys’ A beat Kaierau A by 5 to 3. Technical Old Boys played with the wind in the first spell. Davidson broke away in a characteristic solo run, and his phenomenal pace was too much for the defence. He scored in front of the posts for Welsh to convert.— Technical Old Boys 5, Kaierau AO. That was the score at half-time. The wind had died a lot by this time, but Kaierau made the most of what was available. Don Evans ran, punted through to near Technical Old Boys’ line, where a scramble followed, ending with Anderson scoring. Evans missed The kick.—Technical Old Boys 5, Kaierau 3.
