1 NEW PLYMOUTH COMPETITIONS ! MARTONIANS’ SUUCESS Outstanding success attended the Marton pupils of Miss Joyce Hayward who competed in the recent competitions at New Plymouth. Five pupils made the trip and practically “scooped the pool,” securing five firsts, three seconds, three thirds and two h.c. Special mention was made by the judge. Miss Daphne Knight, in respect to the “Corroboree” and “The Stag’ performances by Miss Mavis Faulding and Miss Dorothy Hill respectively. SEASON OPENS TO-DAY. The football season opens in Rangitikei this afternon at 3 o’clock, when the following senior games will be played:— Bulls v. Hunterville, at Bulls (referee, Mr. A. R. Byres). Taihape County v. Marton Old Boys at Taihape. Halcombe v. Taihape Town, at Halcombe (Mr. I. Ross). As a curtain-raiser to the Hunter-ville-Bulls match at Bulls, Marton Old Boys’ juniors will meet the Bulls’ juniors. The following will represent Old Boys: B. White, G. Laurie, J Hutton, N. Ingle, L. Coleman, C. Calkin, G. Marshall, S. Christopher, W. Davidson, B. Graham, A. Duncan, P. Young, Hec. McLean, F. Death, ingstone. Emergencies: T. Calkin, H. McLean, J. Holley. The game will start at 1.30 p.m., and the bus leaves Marton at 1 p.m. sharp.

FAREWELL TO MR. AND MRS. E M. LLOYD.

„ A nu T mber of friends of Mr - and Mrs. E. M. Lloyd met at ''Pine Park,” Marton, the homstead of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Crabb on Thursday to tender a farewell evening to Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Lloyd, who are leaving Marton to reside m the Kiwitea district. Billiards, crads and community singing was the order of the evening and a: Way ’ in P r °P° sin g the health of the guests of the evening, referred to the services rendered to the community by Mr. Edward Lloyd the guests father, during his residence in Marton as a member of the Marton District High School Committee and s ? r X° n Jockey Club a nd Marton A and P. Mr. Lloyd, in replying, stated that it was very pleasing to know that thev had staunch friends. Both of them had enjoyed their stay in Marton where they had passed their earlv days and sincerely thanked them for the beautiful gifts bestowed upon them, which they would always treasure as a reminder of many happy days in Marton.

COURT LITTLE JOHN H.O.F. There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of Court Little John held on Tuesday evening. C. R. Brother G. Grey presided.

Votes of condolence were passed to Brother Robert Low, in the loss of his wife and Brother C. C. McDonald in the loss of his mother. The secretary stated that the late Mrs. McDonald’s husband had been a trustee and treasurer of the court for many years prior to his death. Next district meeting is to be held in Wellington on June 1, and N.C.R. H. C. Gronn was appointed delegate. Five new members were duly initiated and one proposed. An invitation to the anniversary social of Court Hinemoa, Palmerston North, on May 9, was accepted.

Letters of recommendation were granted to Brother A. Powell, who is visiting English courts in the near future and the court wished him a pleasant voyage and safe return. Appreciation of the service given to the court by Dr. Dick was expressed, and the court members wished him a pleasant trip to the Old Country and a safe return.

After court closed members indulged in a game of indoor bowls, and the lady members provided supper.

MARTON VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. I The following officers have been appointed for the ensuing year; superintendent, G. W. Grey; lieutenant, S. P. Abbott; secretary, L. Mclndoe, No. 1 foreman, D. Fawcett; No. 2 foreman, A. Foster; motorman, A. Campbell; branchmen, W. H. Jones, A. Anderson, S. Abbott, J. McMillan; treasurer, G. W. Grey; auditor, F. R. Hatherley; standing committee, officers, and Motorman A. Campbell and Branchman, W. H. Jones.

RANGITIKEI COUNTY COUNCIL.

At Thursday afternoon’s session of the Rangitikei County Council the following additional business was transacted:—

The purchase of land necessary for the erection of a worker’s dwelling on the Bulls-Scott’s Ferry road was left in the hands of the chairman.

The council decided to call tenders for the duties of caretaker for the county offices and Coronation Hall, under the conditions submitted by the clerk.

The customary valedictory speeches were made at the conclusion of the meeting when the old council adjourned for the last time prior to the elect’ons in May.

MR A. EALY’S TOUR OF INSPECTION

The following itinerary has been arranged for Mr A. Bayly’s tour of inspection of infected sheep on several of the farms in the Rangitikei district: Leave Marton Jockey Clubs Rooms at 10 a.m. on Monday and then visit the farms of A. S. Coleman Duncan, Frederich and Cockburn's (Onepuhi Road), A. P. Howard’s woolshed, and either Deighton ano Purnell’s or H. Stantiall’s. If time permits J. A. Cornfoot’s and T. Norris’ farm at Bulls will be visited; then on to South Makirikiri to Whittington Bros., G. L. Marshalls and Holt Simpson’s. It will be necessary for those who contemplate taking part m the inspection to 'bring their lunches.
