ON HAWERA TRACKS

S I RAT FORD C A NDID ATES THE FINAL GALLOPS. HAWERA, April 1. , i.iL majority of the local horses for ! Stratford were given their final gallops on the Hawera tracks yesterday morning, when conditions were ideal for fast work, and the plough was in capital order, although it became faster as the work progressed. The best efforts were credited to Daisy Chain, Royal Fire, Lowenberg, Student Prince, Golden Orchid and the two-year-olds Prime Quality and Dark Eagle. Daisy Chain (Pepperill) reeled oft half a mile soon after daybreak in 51 She had a little in reserve at the finish and the Sandstar mare is in great order at present. Her prospects are considered rosy on Saturday. Golden Orchild (Sexton), who was accompanied over the first three furlongs by Ruling Lady (Fryer), traversed five furlongs in I.3isec., the first three in 37 4-5. Golden Orchid was a couple of lengths in front when her companion pulled off, and she has gone on the right way since scoring at Opunake. Notium (Cole) infused dash into a round of solid pacework on the inside plough and was anxious to do better. He will meet Race Call on much belter terms on Saturday than at Awapuni last week and he is afforded an excellent opportuney of turning the tables. Trilitha (Sexton) and Fafner (Fryer) were associated over six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, after occupying 51 for the first half. The result of the Trial Stakes appears to lie between this pair, and each is in excellenl fettle. Lickem (Monkley) failed to impress in recording 39 for three furlongs. Ho is not hitting out in his customary style. Naughty Marietta (Sexton) commenced from the six furlong peg and joined by Roo Ra (Fryer) at the completion of two furlongs, ran the full distance in 1.184. No fault can be found with her condition. The best gallop of the morning was credited to Lowenberg (Cole) and Student Prince (Monkley), who were on terms throughout* six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, after taking 504 for the first halfmile. Both horses came home strongly and they should take a lot of beating in their respective races. Dancing Lady (Farland) was slightly ahead of Race Call (George) at the end of live furlongs traversed in 1.3. The former is a brilliant track mare, but Race Call invariably does better with the colours up. He has never looked better than at present and if he goes on the right way in the interim his Easter mission is to be the Ellerslie mile.

Lucrece (Toki) was kept up to her work to run three furlongs in 374. She may be an outside prospect in the Maiden on Saturday. Royal Fire (Cole) went well for a hurdler in getting to the end of hail a-mile in 51sec. He has made good progress since Opunake. Captain Bligh (Fryer) beat Flying Hostess (Monkley) over a similar distance in 51 1-5. The former should be well suited by the roomy Stratford course. On the outside of the course proper with the pegs well out, Prime Quality (Cole) led Dark Eagle (Monkley) over the early stages of five furlongs but there was little between the pair at the finish in —1.44, a smart gallop. Both youngsters should figure prominently in the decision of the Juvenile Handicap and they have benefited from recent racing. Gold Glare is only doing light work at present and intentions are to keep him going with a view to racing during the winter months. His next outing may be at Waverley.
