MATAMATA CUP

: USEFUL FIELD ENGAGED i POSTPONED MEETING i REVIEW 01- PROSPECTS : Special to ‘‘Chronicle.' ; AUCKLAND, April 1. i'ohtponed from February owing to heavy ram, the Matamata Racing Club’s fixture is to be held at Matamata to-morrow. This is one of the closing meetings of the provincial circuit and as the fields are very good indeed the prospects are very bright. Betting will be under the win-anu-place system. The course was hard and fast in the middle of the track and it will stand up to a good deal oi rain. Thirteen is the main in the big event, the Matamata Cup. The list is headed by Jonathan, who now has some weight to carry, and he may tind those below him too* smart at the handicap. Llangollen won both days at Tauranga like a good one and despite a 161 b rise in weight she will still be one of those to beat. Master Briefly has a stayer’s chance, but a better prospect may be Paso Robles, who defeated a very useful field in the Franklin Cup and had a bit in hand at the finish.

Mazir should be back to his best now and this class should be right within his compass, for at his peak he is very good and he has a wonderful chance here. Gay Rose will be better suited by this track than that at Paeroa and if it should rain in the interim she will be one of the fancies. Rona Bay is beicc started by the stable in preference to King Rey, who is being reserved for the Auckland fixture, and she may prove a worthy deputy. She, too, would appreciate an easing of track conditions. The second half of the field is topped by Jewelled Girdle, who has run some fair races, but he may find it difficult to head off this lot. Day Wind cannot be fancied on form, although he is always liable to surprise. King Musk,. Huskie, Gay Streak and Dutch Girl have lightweights’ chances; the last-named ran a fine race in the Tauranga Cup. The Matamata Cup is not an easy race to win, and there may not be much between the first choice, Paso Robles, Jonathan, Mazir, Llangollen and Gay Rose. Two other open races are on the programme, the six furlongs Waharoa Handicap and the slightly-farther Walton Handicap. In the former Erndale would be difficult to beat on a soft track, but otherwise Lornacre, Marie’s Acre, Trilliarch and Prince Acre appear evenly matched. In the Walton Handicap the range is much better, with Tray Bit, Merial, Te Hai, Enge, Prince Rangi, Erndale (if reserved and if wet) and Cheval de Volee.

Superior Guard (Hinuera Hack), Professional (Hurdles), Pirate King (Railway Hack), Milanion (Putaruru Stakes), and High Sea Okoroire Hack) are well placed in their engagements and they should show up. Form horses engaged to-morrow are the following:— _ ]2.o—Hinuera Hack: Superior Guard, Town Section, Ngakaru. 12.45—Tirau Hurdles: Professional, Good Hunting, Day Boy. I.3o—Waharoa Handicap: Marie’s Acre, Lornacre, Trilliarch. 2.ls—Railway Hack: Pirate King, Bronzette, Strathire. 3.s—Matamata Cup; Paso Robles, Jonathan, Llangollen. 3.so—Putaruru Stakes: Milanion, Jayola. Town Section or Silver Eagle. 4.3s—Okoroire Hack: High Sea, Brown Lap, Arawa Rose. s.2s—Walton Handicap: Tray Bit, Prince Rangi, Cheval de Volee.
