WANGANUI UMPIRES ASSOCIATION’S SEASON. THE ANNUAL REPORT. The folowing annual report for the 1937 season will be presented on Tuesday next at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Hockey Umpires’ Association by the honorary secretary, Mr. C. A. Cundie:— The season was a very successful one, and the standard of hockey was fairly high, especially in the Nordon Cup games, in which the Wanganui representatives withstood the challengehges of Feilding, Wairarapa, Waipa and Taranaki. The Wairarapa and Taranaki games were umpired by Mr. J. S. D. Tizard, and the Feilding and Waipa games by Mr. C. A. Cojdie. The Taihape Sub-Association was also unsuccessful in a match against the Wanganui representatives. This game was controlled by Mr. L. R. Spurdie. The association was haid pressed at times to supply umpires for the various competition games and have to thank some of the senior players for their generous assistance throughout the season. Active members also gave loyal support and contributed largely! toward the success of the season and are deserving of special thanks. The forthcoming season promises to I be an exceptionally busy one, as the i visits of the English women's and Indian men’s teams will figure prominently. An appeal is therefore made to secure additional active members. Practical examinations were helc. during the season, the candidtaes being Messrs. D. F. Glenny, S. Hughe:-; and A. C. Watts, all of whom secured “B” grade passes. Mr.... J. S. D. Tizard also examined several Taranaki candidates. Mr. L. R. Spurdie was succesful in passing the Theory Examination of the New Zealand Womens Hockey Association and the New Zealand Hockey Umpires’ Association, and to him are extended hearty congratulations. During the season combined meetings of the Rangitikci, Manawatu and Wanganui umpires were held at Mai ton and Palmerston North, and these were largely attended, the Wanganui quotas being 12 and 8 respectively. At the Marton meeting Mr. J. S. Tizard lectured on the men's rules and the Rev. W. B. Cuming covered the women's rules. At Palmerston Norteh Mr. A. C. Walts lectured on Rule 10 of the men's rules, paying particular attention to obstruction. The penalty bully and advantage rules were very ably dealt with by Mr. W. H. Wilson, of Palmerston North. These lectures were most instructive and helped to clear up many doubtful points. It is hoped that the incoming committee will see its way clear to arrange a similar meeting in Wanganui this season. The association has again suffered a severe loss in the person of Mr. R. L, Thompson, who has transferred his business interests to Hawera. Mr. Thompson was president of the Wanganui Hockey Association for many years and was a most impartial umpire. Many of the improvements at Gonville Park are due to his influence and nothing was too much trouble to him as far as hockey was concerned. He has the very best wishes for success in his new sphere. The balance-sheee shows a credit of 17s 6d and the membership a reduction on last season. Thanks are again due to the Press for their generous assistance with hockey notes and reports. These contained much useful criticism and helped considerably in raising the standard of hockey in Wanganui. The Bulletin was again the source of much valuable information throughout the season and the editor has best wishes for its continued sue-
