MAKIRIKIRI SPORTS

A WEEK FROM NEXT SATURDAY. An energetic committee has made complete arrangements for the Makirikiri sports, which are to be held at Upokongaro on Saturday, April 2. Heading the programme, which is a most attractive one, is the open jump, list. 71b. (Hunter's style). The first prize is 10 guineas and a cup valued at a like amount, to be won three times by the same owner. The second prize is three guineas. The present holder is Mr. J. Goodwin, Mataroa. There will be the keenest of competition in this event. The wood-chopping at Makirikiri will feature a 14-inch event for a first prize of £l4 (including donations from Messrs. W. Ford, W. G. Bason and W. B. Willacy). There is to be a second prize of £4 10s and a third of £1 10s. There will be entries from a wide field in the choppin competitions, the committee offering the John McFarlane Challenge Cup for most points in axemen's events. This is to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals before it becomes the proprty of the winner. A great day is being prepared for Makirikiri next Saturday week (April
