RICCARTON TO-DAY
: C.J.C. MEETING OPENS ! FIRST DAY'S EVENTS REVIEW OF PROSPECTS The spring racing campaign in the Dominion reaches its peak with the Canterbury Jockey Club's four-day carnival at Riccarton, commencing today and extending over Monday, Wednesday and Saturday next. Judging by the size of the fields and the class engaged, the meeting is certain to be another successful fixture, with keen racing and increased totalisator turnovers. The New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap, the oig doucle, and the Welcome Stakes, the juveniles’ classic, are the outstanding features of 10-oay’s programme, and on Monday the New Zealand Derby will attract attention. The totalisator at Riccarton is operated on the win-and-place system. The track is reported to be in excellent order and the going should be fast. The first event is the Spring Brush Hurdles, with eleven engaged, ami it will be interesting to see whether John Charles can account for Tiavenna and Red Sun. On Trentham form The Bigot appears to have a mortgage on the Spring Plate, at special weights, and he should see a short price. Best ot the others may be Siegmund and Rockingham. A handy lield will line up for the Linwood Handicap, with Cardsharper the likely favourite, though good support is sure to come for Cocksure and Nolana. The big field for the New Zealand Cup will present a problem, though in some quarters it appears to have been already solved. To reduce the number by half one may confine attention to Wild Chase, Argentic, Queen of Song, Friesland, Cerne Abbas, Hazoor, Small Boy, Might and Linguist. These include recent winners in Friesland, Cerne Abbas, Hazoor, Small Boy and Linguist, and probably the winner will come from that division, with the choice likely to be Cerne Abbas, Friesland and Small Boy. Keen interest will be focussed on the Welcome Stakes, for it may provide the rest of the juveniles with the opportunity to break the telling run of successes by the progeny of Beau Pere. This sire has three representatives in Gay Son, Taurangi and Peerless, and the first-named pair, both winners at Trentham, will be hard to head off. It looks like Gay Son being preferred to Protector and Taurangi. A good deal will depend on riders and post positions in the Apprentices’ Handicap, in which some useful sorts are engaged over a mile. If started here Cocksure might be favourite, but in his absence Ardchoille, Lickem and Shirred Ribbon may be in demand. Though the field for the Stewards’ Handicap is smaller than that lor the Cup, there is still a pretty problem for backers, who may prefer Ben Braggie to Alma and Laughing Lass. Three-year-old form points to Smoke Screen in the Riccarton Handicap, and the most danger appears likely to come from Big Dock and Last Refrain. Following is the list of acceptances: 12.32 SPRING BRUSH HURDLES (Of £3OO ; JI miles.)
