FIELD OF EIGHTEEN CONTEST AT RICCARTON INTERESTING DETAILS For some lime past keen followers of form have been weighing up the chances of various horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup, to be run at Riccarton to-day, on the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring racing carnival. Hibberd) 7.0 Wild Chase, who heads the list, is owned by his breeder and has fourteen wins to his credit in 27 starts, having secured £5085 in stakes. His wins include the New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Cup, James Hazlett Gold Cup and N.. St. Leger, in addition to which he won the Dunedin Cup under 8.9 and was third in rne Great Autumn under 9.6, the last two efforts being really good for a three-year-old. The Silverado gelding Argentic began racing as a three-year-old and has had thirteen wins in bl starts, having secured £3662 in stakes. He won the C.J.C. Metropolitan and the Wellington Handicap, in addition to being second in the Auckland Cup and third in the New Zealand Cup two years ago. Queen of Song’s fourteen wins in 78 starts include the Wellington Cup, Invercargill Cup, Riverton Cup and Great Autumn Handicap, in addition to which she was a winner at weight-for-age at Flemington twelve months ago, beating the best over twelve furlongs. The six-year-old Tauramai won the Dunedin Guineas at his second outing, this being one of five wins in 21 starts during his career. He has won the Dunedin Cup and Great Autumn Handicap, both run over a mile and a-half.

One of Taranaki's hopes is Friesland, who has won fifteen races in 38 starts, included in his successes being the Thompson Handicap last March, his fifth win in succession. On Labour Day he won the Waverley Cup, which was held to be an excellent Cup trial. The Wanganui-owned but Tara-naki-trained Lowenberg has won six races in 34 starts, his major success being the New Zealand Derby in the year when Kinnoull was pocketed. Other wins include the Stratford Cup and the Liverpool Handicap (at Awapuni), and he was second to Ponty in the Wellington Cup last January. ' Hunting Cat is a Hawke’s Bay candidate who has won eight races in 42 starts. He won the Manawatu Cup and the President’s Handicap (twice) at the Hawke's Bay meeting. He broke down last spring when being prepared lor the N.Z. Cup. Cerne Abbas has been one of the favourites since the issue of the handicaps. Her six wins in 39 starts include the G.N. St. Leger, G.N. Oaks and the Watkins Handicap (at Trentham), in addition to which she was second to Small Boy in the Mitchelson Cup last month. Fifteen wins in 63 starts is the record of Hazoor, who has won the Easter Handicap, Egmont. Cup, Raukawa Cup (Otaki) and Empire Handicap (Wanganui), his most recent success being in the McKelvie Handicap at Bulls last Saturday. Silver Streak has been racing lor seven seasons, during which he has had 123 starts for twenty-four wins, mainly over sprint courses, including the Stewards’ Handicap, though he won twice at ten furlongs at Ashburton. The Mitchelson Cup winner Small Boy has started 55 times for eleven wins, most of them in the Poverty Bay district. Bred in Australia, Sunee is owned by the veteran Trentham trainer J. W. Lowe. Sunee has had 66 starts for eight wins, his best performances being in the Wellington Handicap and the Champion Hack Handicap (at Trentham), noth over eleven furlongs. Seven wins in 50 starts is the record ot Rebel Lad, whose only success in open class was in the Thorndon Handicap (one mile) at Trentham last January. Boomerang has had 66 starts for

six wins and no fewer than 24 minor placings, two of his successes being in the Cornwall Handicap (Ellerslie) end Selwyn Handicap (Riccarton), in audition to which he was second to Scotland in the Avondale Cup. Like Boomerang, Might is trained at Trentham by T. R. George. This will be his 100th start, and he has won 18 races, including the Autumn Handicap (11 furlongs), Nelson Cup, Sockburn Handicap (twice) and Ling Memorial (Otaki). He was third in the Cup three years ago and fourth last year.

The Paladin mare .Jnguist impressed at Gore recently in her 39th start, scoring her eighth win. One ot her best performances was over a mile at Wingatui in tie Stewards’ Handicap. Sixteen starts for six wins and six minor placings is the record of Trebleack, who registered his first win in open company at Gore recently.

Cottingham did not commence racing till five years old, and then had only one race for a win over hurdles. Seven wins in twenty starts have been registered by him, including the Grand National Hurdles.
