C.J.C. MEETING

the MINOR EVENTS HANDICAPS DECLARED 1 Per Press Association 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 27. SPRING BRUSH HURDLES (Oi 4300; 15 miles.)

WINDFALL FOR CHARITY CATERER CUTS LOSSES CAULFIELD CUP POSTPONEMENT Twenty thousand pastx’ies, 1500 dozen oysters, 10001 bs. of ham and thousands of sandwiches were given away to charity as the result of the postponement of the Caulfield Cup. Three months ago, Mr Harry Greville, the caterer, began preparing for the meeting, and on Saturday, when he heard that rain had caused the postponement of the races, he instructed that the food, valued at £llOO, should be distributed through the City Mission and the Salvation Army. Mr Greville had a staff of 700 at Caulfield and, apart from the loss of food, he had to pay wages to those employees who were working early in preparation and the fares of waitresses and others who came to the course. Three previous losses have been experienced by Mr Greville at big race meetings. The postponement was announced at 10.45 a.m., but a number of race-1

goers were already on their way. A Geelong train, which arrived in city before 11 a.m., .brought 600 people, many of whom were going to Caulfield. Taxis were in demand earlier than the drivers had expected and theatres were crowded in the afternoon. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club had not insured the meeting against rain, as postponements at Caulfield are rare. The last was on Guineas Day in 1923.
