General Situation—An anti-cyclone is moving eastwards off New Zealand while a depression is advancing slowly across the Tasman. Forecast.—Winds: East to north-easterly at first over the northern half of the North Island, otherwise northerlies prevailing, light to moderate generally but gradually freshening and becoming strong in places about and south of Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough to rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere slight to moderate but later rising south of Cape Egmont. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate but increasing northerly winds, backing to southerlies by to-morrow night in the southern portion; seas slight to moderate but rising. Weather; Fair to fine generally at first, cloudy to overcast however, and rain developing soon in the western and southern portions of the South Island and extending later northwards over districts with a westerly aspect. Temperatures mild. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 10 hours. Rainfall, nil. Temperatures: Maximum, 62deg. Fahr.; minimum, 40deg. Fahr. Time of sunset to-day, 6.08 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow, 5.05 a.m. Phases of the Moon for October.—New Moon, October 4; First Quarter, October 13; Full Moon, October 20; Third Quarter, October 27.
