OBITUARY

F. E. GUEST, M.P. LONDON, April 28. The death has occurred of Captain Rt. Hon. F. E. Guest, Conservative member for Drake in the House of Commons. “MOTHER OF HOLLYWOOD" NEW YORK, April 27. The death is announced of Lucy Beaumont, veteran stage and film actress. Lucy Beaumont, who was known as “the Mother of Hollywood,” was born at Clifton, Bristol, in 1869. Her father was manager of the Bristol National Provincial Bank. Taking up a stage career, she was a member of touring companies for many years. But in 1914 a domestic tragedy occurred which altered her whole outlook on life, and she resolved to make a fresh start in America. She obtained an engagement at one of the theatres. In the great actors’ equity strike in 1919 she was the first actress to “walk out.” In 1925 she went to Hollywood and engaged for the part of a mother. It was decided that mothers were her ideal role, and she was never allowed to be anything else. In the summer of 1934 she spent a holiday in England and said that her greatest desire was to be able some day to settle down in the English countryside.
