ROYAL ACADEMY

THE YEAR'S "SENSATION” SENSITIVE COUNCIL’S ACT LONDON, April 28. The usual annual Royal Academy “sensation" has arisen. It concerns this year’s picture, “The Lord of Creation,” by Oswald Moser, who states that though the picture has been accepted and hung, he has received a letter saying that it is “a picture which certainly alludes to an affair which is a matter of especially painful regret to the public,” and the president of the council has decided to remove it from the exhibition. Mr Moser says: “They obviously think that it refers in some way to the Duke of Windsor, but it does nothing of the sort. It is simply a symbolical study of a young man, painted two years ago, with a crown upon his head, and is purely symbolical of man’s supposed superiority over the birds and beasts.” A representative of the council who was concerned with the rejection says: “We were told, and it was common gossip, that the picture was an allegorical study of King Edward, and we felt that though the portraiture was not very strong it would cause some disturbance and come to the ears of the Royal Family. It is our policy never to exhibit a picture that can be construced as a reflection on any member of the Royal Family.”

RATHER DULL EXHIBITION PIGS A MARKED FEATURE LONDON, April 28. The Royal Academy Exhibition Is a routine almost to the point of dullness. The landscape work maintains its usual respectable level and the portraiture is generally meritorious. There are no problem pictures. A marked feature, iiowever, is the plentitude of pigs in a variety of farm pictures. The central hall is occupied by large canvases of Royalties from George 111. to George VI., all of which have previously been exhibited.
