HAWKE CUP CRICKET

WANGANUI’S FIGHTING CHANCE

WILL BATSMEN SUCCEED? SATURDAY S SCORING. (Special to “Chronicle.”) Wanganui has a fighting chance in the Hawke Cup challenge match being played at Palmerston against the holders (Manawatu). The holders established a lead of 110 runs on the first innings, but Wanganui fared better with the ball against Manawatu’s second strike, capturing four wickets for 66. Assuming that the Manawatu tail will behave as it did in the first innings the challengers have a prospect of getting them out with a brighter look about the telegraph than it had on the first day. Warnes bowled well for Wanganui, proving his usual trickiness. With a bit of luck he would have had another wicket to his credit, Dow missing an easy stumping, a performance decidedly in contrast with his usual. There was no play in the match in the morning on Saturday owing to rain, play resuming at two in the afternoon on a favourable wicket. Wanganui was a trifle cautious, however, and did not make as much use of the wicket as Manawatu did with similar facilities the day before. Looked at from all angles one can say that the challengers have a fighting chance of winning, but that is all.
