ANOTHER VERSION

VERY DREARY BATTING TO-DAY WILL DECIDE THE ISSUE. I I’er Fi'ens ArborifU ion. j PALMERSTON N., Dec. 27. Dreary batting by both sides was witnessed when the Hawke Cup game between Manawatu and Wanganui was continued on Saturday. Continuing the first innings with the overnight score of 23 for 4 the challengers were dismissed, alter a monotonous and uninspiring display, for 128, giving Manawatu a lead of 110 on the first innings. The home side's batting in the second strike was just as unenterprising and dull as Wanganui’s, and when stumps were drawn for the day four wickets were down for 66. Rain overnight thoroughly soaked the wicket and it was not fit for play till the afternoon, when it was in good order and the outfield had lost much of the morning dampness. Conditions throughout, the afternoon remained dull and threatening, but the rain held off. Connor proved lop scorer for Wanganui, his stand for 42 coming at a valuable time and holding his side together. The Manawatu fielding was poor, the ground work Jacking the crispness displayed by the visitors while four catches were dropped. The fact bowlers, Berquist and pritchard, shared the bowling honours coming out with four for 18 and three for 10. respectively. Batting cautiously, the Manawatu opening batsmen gave the cup holders a fair start, but four wickets then fell in rapid succession, Warnes taking three for 22. The game will be concluded to-day, when, unless both innings are completed, Manawatu will win on the first innings.
