AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB BOXING DAY SPORTS FRANK SHARPLEY PRESENT Success attended the Patea Amateur Athletic Club’s Boxing Day sports, in spite of the dull day ana ban on children’s events. Added attraction was given by Frank Sharpley, New Zealand 220 yards hurdles champion, from Hawke's Bay, competing in events and he also gave an exhibition, his superb hurdling being enthusiastically cheered by the crowd. Band, under Drum-Major Nairn, rendered enjoyable music. Mr. Gunnison’s loud-speaker for announcing was also appreciated. Mr. R. W. Haddow, on behalf of the committee, made a presentation to Mr. lan Campbell for piping for the dancing. The Winchester Cup, for most points in 100yds., 220 and 440, was won by L. Burgess, of Wanganui, the president. Mr. F. Locker presenting it. and the Cooper Cup for the five-mne cycle to M. Green, of Hawera, who also won it last year. This was the main event on the programme and Green, scratch man, giving away 290 yds., caught up in the 10th lap, went to the front in the 15th and won by nearly a lap. Officials, particularly the secretaries, Messrs. N. Gardiner and L. Fisher, are to be congratulated on the smooth running of affairs. Prominent workers were the handicapper and starter, Mr. C. J. Gardiner, assistant, Mr. J. Goodwin and Messrs. F. Locker, Fred McKenna, W. T. Lamb, A. Maule, G. Lithgow. W. Railton, J. Cunnison. T. Nelson, R. W. Haddow, G. Fraser, J. O'Grady, D. Hurley and J. PERSONAL

Mr. Trevor Burgess, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, left on Xmas day on transfer to Thames. Mr. and Mrs. C. Master, of Stratford, spent Christmas in Patea. Mrs. Rex Campbell, of Wanganui, was in Patea for Xmas. Mrs. Burgess, of Waipukurau, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Back. The small baby of Mr. and Mrs. J. Sargeant, of Palmerston North (Miss Nita Sutherland), was found dead in

bed on Saturday morning. An inquest is to be held. Miss Alma Kennedy, of Inglewood, has been appointed assistant to the Patea County clerk, Mr. G. Broker, out of 15 applicants. At a special meeting recently the Patea County Council decided to hold their jubilee luncheon on Monday, February 1. Misses Gladys and Pearl Kelly leave to-morrow for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Anderson and Miss Nola Anderson are camped at the Patea Beach. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Haddow and family take up residence at their beach house this week. In the accountancy professional examination held recently Mr. Nathan Gardiner passed in bookkeeping and accounts I, and Mercantile Law I. Mr. Norman Blake passed in auditing and bookkeeping and accounts 111. Patea had a record Xmas Eve, an air of jollity pervading. The band rendered music and sweets and novelties were given to the children. The prosperous upward trend was evident to all business people.
