TENTATIVE PROGRAMME CHRISTMAS WEEK PLANS A meeting ol the organising committee of the Wanganui Christmas Carnival, which is being promoted under the co-ordinating influence of the Wanganui Tourist and Development League, the following tentative programme was approved, and instructions given to print the schedule: Christmas Day.—Jubilee bowling tournament opens. Boxing Day.—Monster regatta at Sandy Hook (Maori canoe, motorboat, and rowing events); North Island rifle championships at Putiki; cricket match, Wanganui v. Victoria College, Cook's Gardens; evening, grand carnival fancy dress dance. Sunday, December 27—River excursions. At Ratana, the Maoris will welcome and entertain the visitors m traditional Maori style. Monday, December 28. Cricket match continued; evening, grand swimming carnival at Gonville baths. Tuesday, December 29.—Afternoon: Grand carnival procession. Evening: Procession repeated and followed by monster display by combined bands at Cook's Gardens (music and marching). Wednesday, December 30.—Horticultural Society’s gladioli show; openair wrestling at Cook’s Gardens. Evening: Unique and spectacular display by Geo. Allan's Dance School; grand carnival choir contest; display by the Y.M.C.A. tumbling troupe. Thursday, December 31.—Street novelties and shop window competitions"; 10 p.m., at Cook’s Gardens, monster pyrotechnic display, "Darktown” fire brigade display; dancing on the green to see the Old Year out and the New Year in. New Year’s Day.—Bridge-to-bridge swimming race (subject to tide); Cook's Gardens, cricket match, Wanganui v. Wellington Mercantile League; Wanganui tennis championship tournament opens; children's grand floral procession, followed by I children's floral tableaux, etc., at Spriggens Park. Evening: At Cook’s Gardens, a wonder programme of children’s floral dances and tableaux, and Maori competitions in haka, poi, and song; fancy dress ball. Saturday, January 2.— Cricket match continued; tennis championships continued; greyhound races, Wanganui Cup meeting, on the Wan- : ganui Jockey Club's course; also, axe- j men’s carnival (12in. maiden chop, 12in. open chop, and Kin. open chop). Evening: At Cook’s Gardens, grand carnival sports meet, athletic and cycling, spectacular events, thrilling finishes. Sunday, January 3.—At Castlecliff Beach, monster display and competitions by surf life-saving clubs. To be arranged: Golf and croquet tournaments and brass instrument solo competition. From Boxing Day to January 4, 32nd. annual conference of Presbyterian Bible classes and youth workers. The meeting discussed the various programmes submitted by the contributing sports and other bodies and approved of them. An appeal is to be made to the retail section of the city to organise street displays and tc keep the carnival spirit flying within their premises. Special efforts are to be marie to have the city lit to brighter effect than ever before.
