OLIVE OIL SHORTAGE

DUE TO SPANISH WAR EFFORTS TO PRODUCE SYNTHETIC LONDON, Oct. 13. Chemists of the Wool Industries Research Association of Leeds are carrying out tests by which they hope to produce synthetic olive oil, thus enabling the wool industry to overcome the scarcity caused by the Spanish War. Mr Walter Garner, chief chemist of Lister and Company, of Bradford, claims to have perfected a synthetic oil manufactured from Empire raw materials. He estimates that its use will save industry £120,000 yearly.

L. Packman, who continued the inquiries begun by Detec-tive-Sergeant Robertson, produced a statement which he said the accused had made voluntarily. In this, it was alleged, Hill had stated that he was very angry, lost his head and punched his wife. When his wife called out that made him worse, and he went to the back verandah, got a gun and loaded it. “After I ’oaded the gun I went to where they (Joe and accused’s wife) were, and I was going to frighten them,” the statement accused was alleged to have made, proceeded. “I did not intend to fire the gun When they saw me with the gun my wife made a grab for it and when she caught hold of the gun it went offl did not say to either my wife or my brother that I would fix the pair of them” In reply to Mr. Hussey, Detective Packman said that from inquiries he had made the accused was given an excellent character. Mr. Hussey: A good, hard-working man, fond of his 'amily?—Yes. And not by any means a waster?— No. The accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed in his own surety for £2OO and two sureties for £lOO each. The condition that he report daily to the police was waived.
