HUNTERVILLE

GOLF The resumption of the golf season has not been accompanied by much enthusiasm and only seven players were present during the week-end to take part in the stroke competition. This was won by Savery with a net score of 84. A match against Hawkestone is to be played on the local links to-day. TENNIS CLUB The following is the annual report to be presented at the annual general meeting of the Hunterville Tennis Club (Inc.), which is to be held on Thursday night:— The balance-sheet of the club discloses that the year's workings resulted in a debit balance at the bank of £l3 10s lid, which is considered quite satisfactory in view of the unusual expenditure incurred. As the result of a very severe gale a considerable portion of the fence enclosing the two courts was completely wrecked necessitating replacement and this Was effected at a cost of £6 10s.

The Bowling Club being financially embarrassed due to’’ the guarantors expressing the desire that the liability of some £3OO to the Bank of New Zealand be not increased, the committee decided to make a grant of £l5 by way of assistance, as our club was vitally interested, owing to the fact that the land containing our two courts adjacent to the pavilion is embodied in the title in the name of the Bowling Club, and which is held in support of the guarantee to the Bank of New Zealand. To further this end a dance was held, the net proceeds of which, £2O 10s 6d were handed over to the Bowling Club. These two items contributed in no small measure in enabling the bowlers to carry on. The old method of supplying hot water was dispensed with in favour of electricity, and this was installed in conjunction with the Croquet Club. The strength of the club has been depleted through many members leaving the district, but the coming sea son promises to be most successful as many new numbers are assured. The past season was disappointing insofar as matches were concerned, as the inclemency of the weather necessitated many postponements which resulted in the abandoning of most games. The usual competitions were held for club members and the winners are to be congratulated on their performance. The ladies’ handicap doubles was won by Misses K. Cummins and E. McDonald; ladies handicap singles, Mrs. P. G. Rhodes; Hammond Cup, Miss Thompson and A. O’Brien; men’s handicap singles, W. Beale; men’s championship singles, N. Gordon and Butement reached the final but did not play the match; ladies’ championship singles. Mrs. P. G. Rhodes. Special mention is due to Messrs.

Gordon and O’Brien on their performances in Wanganui where Mr. Gordon won the junior singles, and in partnership with Mr. O’Brien annexed the junior doubles. In conclusion I have to thank the office bearers for the capable manner in which they carried out their several duties during the season.
