RAETIHI
FISHING SEASON Further reports are to hand regarding the fishing prospects in the Waimarino Aclimatisation Society’s district. Two local anglers met with fair success during the week-end, taking nine fair-sized trout from the Mangawhero stream. There are every indications of a successful seai son, most of the streams being fairly | well stocked with fish which, while of I not outstanding size, are in good con- | dition and were rising well in the jMakatoku Stream towards dusk. Reports to hand from the outlving I agents in the district are to the effect I that licences are selling well up to I previous years’ standards, despite the increase in cost. The secretary, not anticipating. the demand, found it necessary to procure extra books of licence-forms for the various agents. He states that there is not too great I a demand on ladies' licences. FOOTBALL Next Saturday will see the final game in the Ruapehu Rugby SubUnion’s junior competition, when Karioi and Ohakune will meet to decide who will hold the Charity Cup. Ohakune defeated Athletic at Ohakune on Saturday by the substantial margin of 15 to nil. Next Sunday week a church parade of all footballers in the district will be held at the Methodist Church. The Raetihi Football Club are sponsoring the project and it is anticipated that a good muster will take part in the parade. The Raetihi Club’s annual social evening will be held on Saturday evening. QUEEN CARNIVAL Over £B5 is in hand as a result of the Queen Carnival being conducted in the Waimarino district to augment the finances of the A.P.H. and I. Society. This sum represents the actual cash handed in, but it is freely stated that the secretaries of various queens have funds in hand which will easily bring the total up to the sum aimed at by the carnival committee. One of the most successful functions held in conjunction with the carnival was a social and dance at Orautata Hall, when supporters of the blue queen (Miss Marion Awburn) were present from all sections of the district. Following is the position of the three candidates, the weekly tally of votes taking place on Saturday: - Miss Awburn (blue), North 9247 Miss Anderson (green), Central 5675 Miss Boswell (red), South 5427 VALEDICTORY An opportunity was taken by the staff of the Raetihi Post Office to make a presentation to Mr. W. Gosling (who has been appointed postmaster at Tokaanu) at a happy little function held prior to his departure for his new place of residence. In presenting Mr. Gosling with a cutglass salad bowl on behalf of the staff, Mr. W. Whyte (postmaster), paid a tribute to the sterling qualities possessed by the recipient. The postmaster's sentiments were supported by Messrs. Godby, Tulloch, Mercer. Partington and James. Mr. Gosling suitably responded. A LONG JOURNEY A young man arrived in Raetihi on Monday on a bicycle, having ridden from Hamilton. He was making for Wanganui and thence to Foxton, where his home is. Looking the worse for his long ride (which was done in stages) the traveller said he had to be in Foxton by Tuesday, but on learning the nature of the journey ahead of him was not too optimistic about completing his trip in the specified time. Strapped to his cycle were two fairly hefty suitcases, together with an axe. PERSONAL Mr. E. Larkin, formerly town clerk of Ohakune, is at present an inmate of the Waimarino Public Hospital. Mr. J.
