RAETIHI
W AIM AKIN 0 SHOW. The committee of the Waiinarino A.P.H. and 1. Association has decided to make some alterations in the schedule for the next annual show which I>as been fixed, for January 29, 1936. The committee made the date to suit tradespeople, Wednesday now being the weekly half-holiday at Raetihi. The annual ram fair will be held <<n Saturday, February 8. This season Alessrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., are the selling auctioneers. At the last meeting of the committee, Air. D. D. AlcLean proposed some additional horse events and after discussion these’ were added to the schedule. Air. A. B. Harris proposed that fat cattle be replaced ou the list. In 1933 or 1934 these classes were deleted as the competition cup had been won outright, bu|t he thought breeders would exhibit without a cup. This was finally agreed to by the committee. Air. J. Handley’ did not think any alteration was necessary in the sheep section. The president (Mr. W. AlcNie) said a settler had advised him that he would be exhibiting some Southdowns this year and he hoped there would be plenty of competition. It was decided that where there was only one competitor onl.y half prize money be paid. The (Air. W. Jack) said this was a rule at most shows, but it did not appear in the Waimarino regulations. It was agreed to remove the limit of entries to the ram fair. The appointment of stewards and judges will be made at the next meeting c-f the committee. GIFT EVENING. A very enjoyable gift evening was tendered Miss Cowles, who has been teacher at the Middle Road School. Aliss Cowles has resigned from the position and is shortly to bo married. About 40 residents gathered at Air. D. Hussey’s woolsdied, where dancing, interspersed with songs and other items, was carried on till midnight. Air. Hussey, senr. ? spoke of the good progress made by the pupils during Aliss Cowles’ terms and referred to the pleasant relations that had always existed between teacher and scholars. Two little girls, 'Thelma and Alaurecu Hussey, presented Aliss Cowles with a pretty bouquet. Air. H. E. Frederick, on behalf nf the residents of the district, expressed the regret of all at Aliss Cowles departure and in asking her to accept the useful and pretty gifts arranged on the table assured her that the best wishes for a happy and prosperous future accompanied each one of them. Aliss Cowles had made many friends during her stay in the Waimarino and a warm welcome would always await her in the future. Air. IS. Berry, chairman of the School Conunitee, endorsed these remarks and referred to the good work accomplished by Alisa- Cowles in the garden and grounds surrounding ture school. Air. D. Hussey' spoke of the pleasure it had been to have Aliss Cowles in the social life of the district. Ou rising to reply the guest was greeted with musical honours. Aliss Cowles expressed regret at leaving as she had made many good friends and had enjoyed her stay. Thanks to the great hospitality’ and goodwill extended to her in the district she had only pleasant thoughts and recollections of her stay. Everyone had been kind and sociable and she bad appreciated it very much. Alusic was supplied by Airs. Geraghty, Aliss AT. Littlewood and Air. T. AlcCann on the piano and Alessrs. Barrett, Smith and Turner on the accordeon. Songs were sung by’ Air. M. Berry and Air. Gasgoyne. Supper, supplied by the ladies and dis|rensed by Alesdanics D. Hussey, E. Hussey and S. Berry, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a very pleasant evening. BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED. A number of friends of Aliss Doris Anderson and Air. B. K. Davies gathered in the Druids’ Hall on Thursday’ night on the occasion of a gift evening on their approaching weddang. Airs. A. G. Erwin was the hostess for the evening and the hall was prettily decorated. Competitions and dancing were indulged m, splendid music beingsupplied by Aliss I. Anderson (piano), Aliss J. Ingram (violin), Air. L. Strange (saxophone) and Airs. J. Alcßinde (guitar). Airs. W. Watson played extras. A statute waltz was won by Mr. H. Alanson and Aliss Armitage. Competitions were won by Airs. AlcKonc, Airs. T. Ward, junr., and Air. J. Loawell. During the evening a recitation was rendered by Aliss Armitage and a song by Air. O. Larsen. A tableful of gifts, useful and ornamental, were presented by Air. A. G. Erwin, who expressed the best wishes of a large circle of friends. Air. li. Davies suitably replied. A sumptuous sup; er was done full justice to and the happy evening brought to a close with, the singing of Auld Lang Syne. PRESENTATION. The committee of the Raetihi Women’s Institute and the orchestra in connection With, lihat organisation met at the residence of Air. and Airs. L. N. Ritchie and a social evening'was spent, arid the opportunity was taken to- thank the members of the orchestra for the services rendered during the season. Airs. AV. Jounneaux asked Airs. Alcad, th pianiste, to accept a cake dish r and Airs. D. J. Berry handed Air. H. L. Hogg a set of brushes. These gifts it was explained were small tokens of appreciation of the work Air. Hogg, as leader of the c-rcnestra, and Airs Aleau, at the piano. The recipients suitably replied, assuring the institute that what had been done had been a pleasure. GENERAL. Aliss Stella Laing, of Auckland, h at present on a visit to her parents at Raetihi. . At the annual meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, Airs. C. A. McDonald was elected president, Alesdames Laing and C. H. Eaull vicepresidents, Airs. AV. H. Sandford treasurer and Airs. N. Brown secretary.
