MARTON
THE CIVIC THEATRE. “THE LITTLE COLONEL.” Little Shirley Temple’s unusual interest in her latest picture, “The Little Colonel,” in which she shares starring honours with Lionel Barrymore, was clue to a combination of circumstances that did not obtain in her previous films. It thrilled America’s darling that the title role should fall to her. She wanted to know, before the tak ing of the picture, what dresses she would wear, and how closely they resembled the period costumes of the post Civil War days worn by the grownups. Shirley was also absorbed by thc spectacular features in this Fox Film, pic tore. The story opens with a tremendous baptismal scene of coloured people singing spirituals up a winding river. Still another scene that roused her wonder was that in which the en tire army post corps goes on parade to honour Shirley as the “little Colonel” of the regiment. “The Little Colonel,” based on the acclaimed book of the same name, will come to thc Civic Theatre on Saturday and Alonday. Barry more plays the gruff Yank-hating Kentucky colonel, and Shirley the charming tot who proves a peace maker. In the noatble cast of this de Sylva production, whose closing sequence is in technicolour, are Evelyn Venable, John Lodge, Sidney Blackmer, and the ace of tap dancers, Bill Robinson.
