PATEA

GOLF. With glorious weather prevailing on Wednesday, the Patea Ladies’ Club day, it was not surprising when several good scores were recorded. Mrs. Baker put in her third card for a handicap of 18, bringing her into the senior division. Miss M. Gibbings, who has been playing consistently well and lias already reduced her handicap this seasen, did a round of 99, bringing her handicap down from 26 to 22. In a match for the club’s challenge brooch, Miss T. Gibson (challenger) defeated Mrs. Glenny (holder). With the L.G.U. medal round, the first round of a Stableford bogey competition was held and proved popular, the good rounds played by most mem bers resulting in a number, gaining equal points. A second and possibly third similar competition will be held. SURF CLUB. With the approach of warmer weather, members of the Patea Surf and Life-saving Club have become active. At a meeting of the committee held last Tuesday night, Mr. A. Maxwell presiding over a large attendance, matters relating to the past year were discussed, while the club’s delegate to the Taranaki centre (Mr. B. How) wrote reporting on a recent meeting of the centre. He asked for direction on several points, while advising that the annual meeting of the Taranaki centre would be held in November. The meeting decided to hold the club’s annual meeting on October 15, while a small dance was agreed to be held on October 9. Discussion on financial matters and as to the club’s position of the Taranaki championships were held at the Patea beach, also* took place. ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH. At the fortnightly euchre and bridge evening in St. George’s schoolroom last Wednesday there was an unusually large attendance. Enjoyable games were played at the numerous tables, flag 5(10 particularly being very jolly and enjoyable. At the conclusion of play, and following supper, Rev. W. H. Walton presented the prizes to the winners, namely, Miss V. Sheild and Mr. E. C. Gilbert (top bridge) and Air. and Mrs. Baker and Air. and Mrs. J. A. Wither (flag 500). CRICKET. It seems doubtful of there bring sufficient, interest in Patea in cricket to warrant the club continuing. I’he an nuai meeting was called for Wednesday night, but lack of members attending forced those present to postpone the meeting. This is difficult for the club, as the annual meeting of the South Taranaki Association takes place on Friday at Hawera, and the Patea delegates (last year’s pro tern) wiil have no instructions to act upon. In the meantime, those keen to form the club and get an XL. playing again are to interview those possibly interested, and a. meeting will be called nt
