MARTON
MARTON HARRIERS W AIT A R A-TON E W PL YMOU TH RACE COMMENTS BY “STAYER” I have just received tne handicaps for the above race, which will be run over a course of 9| miles on Saturday. Some of our runners have been well treated, in fact all of them except D. Macpherson. The handicaps are as follows:—F. Hill scratch, F. Williams 4min. 25sec., D. Macpherson 4min. 50sec., A. Gorrie 6min. 15sec., R. Parkinson 7min. 30sec., E. llegglun Bmin. lusec, S. Hurley llmin. F. Hill is co marker on scratch with C Broad, the New Plymouth champion. Hill has beaten Broad twice this season, at Wanganui in the centre championships and at Wellington in the national championships. 1 think Hill will go very close for fastest time honours. F. Williams, on 4.15, has a good chance of winning if he can produce his old form. He has been very liberally treated by the handicapper, who possibly took the Wangaehu race and the Way Cup race as his guide. These were his two worst races. D. Macpherson is on the 4.50 mark. It is evident he has been overrated by the handicapper. His chances of even being iu the first dozen are very re mote. A. Gorrie is well treated with 6.15. Here again is evidence that the Wangaehu race and the Way Cup race have been taken as the standard. Gorrie ought to be in the lirst six without having to extend himself over much. R. Parkinson, on 7.30, is well placed. He has improved considerably these last two runs and should perforin very well. E. Hegglun has 8.15, the best handicap he has had for a long time and if he strikes form he should be well to the front. He is so erratic that I have not a great deal of faith in him. S. Hurley, on llmin.. is given a good chance and I would not be surprised to see him in the first three. Hurley ought to make it his aim to get up with the limit men as soon as possible and if he once gets in the lead it will help him along greatly.
The New Plymouth Club are holding a dance on Saturday evening at which the Marton runners will be the guests of the evening. On the return trip the team intend paying a short visit to Mount Egmont It is anticipated that a pleasant and profitable weekend will be spent in the Taranaki town. THE CIVIC THEATRE “BREWSTER’S MILLIONS” Tuneful music, original dances, exotic settings, lots of novelties and plenty of comedy are the promised ingredients of “Brewster’s Millions,” the new British and Dominion musical starring Jack Buchanan, which will be finally shown at the Civic Theatre tonight. For the big scene of the film, a Corsican carnival, in which more than a thousand reveleers take part, Ray Noble composed a special dance number with a new and exciting rhythm called “Caranga.” This colourful affair is performed by the revellers en masse, and is regarded by the director, Thornton Freeland, as the high spot of the film. The settings range from Monte Carlo to Mayfair and from the bridge of a luxury yacht to the gallery of the West End theatre.
