DOMINION CELEBRATIONS UNEMPLOYED TO BENEFIT GOVERNMENT HOLIDAY. [ Ppf Press Association ] WELLINGTON, March 19. The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes made public to-day a portion of the Government’s proposals for the celebration in New Zealand of His Majesty’s Silver Jubilee in May next. All churches are invited to hold thanksgiving services on May 12. There is no objection to churches so desiring holding ihe services on May 6 also, which day is to be a paid holiday for all Government employees, including the casual labourers and those working under awards. Any employees required by the nature of their employment to work on that day will be compensated by an extra day’s pay or extra leave in lieu of pay. During jubilee week the GoveVnme.< buildings in the four main centres will be illuminated at night and will carry flags and bunting byday. and on all such buildings in all of the main towns flags and bunting. On the morning of May 6 an official function will be held in Parliament buildings. The gathering will be , addressed by the Governor-General and the acting Prime Minister, and. the Mayor of Wellington will be invited to speak. A. military review will be held in the four main centres and the Royal Salute will be fired in every saluting centre. A jubilee gift is to be presented to His Majesty on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand, probably in the nature of a Government subsidy, assisted by public subscription, Io some deserving cause in the Dominion. Arrangements are in train for markinb the occasion by some extra payment to the unemployed. The educational authorities will be invited to declare May 6 a full holiday at all schools and to request teachers on some convenient .day during the week to undertake some particular recognition of the event as part of the school curriculum. Local authorities will be invited to grant a holiday to their employees on May 6 and display bunting during jubilee, week and organise suitable celebrations. Boy Scouts and organised young people are generally invited to arrange a Dominion-wide chain of bonfires, and the Broadcasting Board is to feature suitable programmes. All sporting bodies are invited to hold special sporting events during the week.
