WOMEN’S SINGLES

A WIMBLEDON SURPRISE VICTORY FOR MISS HARTIGAN MISS SCRIVEN BEATEN (By Telegraph—Press Association— LONDON, July 2. At Wimbledon iu the All-England tennis championships, women’s singles, quarter-final, Miss Joan Hartigau defeated Miss Peggy bcriveu, singles champion of France for the last two years and conqueror of Miss Helen Jacobs. Miss Hartigau mixed her game admirably, hit her forehand with great power, and came to the net advantageously. Miss Scriven was unnerved when she was frequently penalised for footfaulting. In the men’s doubles Hc-pman contributed valuably and often spectacularly to the defeat of Perry and Hughes. Hopman’s return of service and overhead smashing were very sound. He also was the tactician of his side.. Prenn and Hopman concentrated their attack upon Hughes, who was weak throughout. Turnbull and McGrath gave an impressive display against Shields and Sharpe. McGrath returned Shields’ hurricane service on the backhand with added force. Turnbull was responsible for some terrific smashes. Detailed results follow; — Women’B Singles Quarter-finals
