CARNIVAL DANCE

St. Peter’s Parish Hall was a scene of gaiety last night on the occasion of tho Carnival Dance. Despite the inclement weather there was a splendid attendance which manifested the interest and enthusiasm in the Queen Carnival, of which this was the final function. The barometer reflecting the position of the various candidates was adjusted half-hourly and as first one and then another came to the top it provided quite a thrill. Shortly after ten o’clock when all funds had been handed in, the final result was posted and it was revealed that the Guild candidate, Aliss Wilma Christensen, headed the contest. The young lady received quite an ovation and was escorted round the hall to resounding cheers and

the strains of “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The vicar (Air. Malcolm), in announcing the results, expressed the appreciation of St. Peters’ for all that had been done to make the carnival such a decided success. The result had exceeded their most sanguine expectations. He commented with admiration on the splendid spirit of goodfellowship and sporty manner in which the whole contest had been conducted, and extended hearty thanks to those who had so liberally contributed time, energy an money in response to the call. The activity of the various committees had been amazing, and had revealed the fact that not only did the , district possess an efficient and willing band of workers but that the church was blessed with loyal and devot-ed adherents and friends, who, when occasion demanded, would rise wholeheartedly in its support. The crowning ceremony would take place in the Gonville Town Hall to-night (Thursday), and would be under the capable direction of Aliss Swan. The ceremony would be a beautiful and interesting affair; a fitting climax to the labours of the past few weeks. It will be followed by a dance. The vicar’s remarks were greeted with hearty applause, immense enthusiasm being aroused when he announced that the total nett proceeds were approximately £268. Supper was then served and the fun waxed fast and furious as the midnight hour*, app reached. The fast floor and excellent music provided by St. Peter’s Orchestra left no-thing to be desired by th-e dancers, and the evening was voted a thorough success. All would look forward to another such enjoyable function to-night. During the evening Miss Wadham was adjudged the winner of the “best hat” competition. All other competition in connection with the carnival were finalised and the results will be duly advertised' later in the week.
