WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT MATAROA. The usual monthly meeting of the Institute was held on Thursday, June 28. when the president. Airs. Grill, presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. It was decided that Airs. Gill, represent the Institute at the annual conference to be held in July. The points competition for the best Kintyre cake was won by Mrs. Garmonsway 1, Aliss Siddle 2, and Airs. Davies 3. Airs. Duffin kindly gave a demonstration on making lamp shades, and also arranged a competition which was won by Aliss Rampton. Airs. Stoedman gave great pleasure wth her singing of the “Huia Song,” and later led the community singing. Owing to the conference, the next meeting will be held on July 19, instead of July 26. Afternoon tea was served by Airs. Marshall and Aliss Rampton, after which the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. On Saturday, June 30, the institute held a social and dance in the Public Hall. In spite of a heavy snow 7 storm, there was a large attendance and a happy time was spent with dancing interspersed with musical and elocutionary items. Those taking part were:—Schoolgirls, folk dance and Cochin China dance; Air. Garmonsway, guitar solo; Airs. Lemon, song; Toni Aitken, recitations; Dorothy Gill, recitations; Air. Barnett, recitation; Airs. Smythe, Aliases Siddle, Whiteman, Davies and Garmonsway, ballet; Air. Gill. song. 'The spot -waltz was won by Airs. Ferg >n and Air. Smythe, and the Monte Carlo by Miss N Ward and Air. Evans. Alcsdames Garmonsway and BenncU made very efficient Al’s.C., while Messrs. Troy and Carrington kindly supplied the music for the dancing.
