FOOTBALL DAY

It was evident that some unusual event was taking place yesterday, as the streets were crowded with visitors. People came from all points of the compass for the Nortn Island Rugby Trial Match, and it was a glad crowd that wended its ways to the Rugby arena. For the skies were blue and the sun did its best to dispel the slightly keen wind coming from the snow country. On all sides were heard expressions of the thankfulness that the storm had called a halt for the great event. Little groups of football fans congregated on the footpaths, or dined in restaurants to talk about the game and the various capabilites of the players. But while their menfolk were interested in the event of the day, many of the women were keen to see the shops and take advantage of sale time to make purchases. So they took the opportunity to wander round the stores immediately lunch was over before wending their way to the football ground. Visitors came prepared for cold weather and were wearing fur coats, or heavy coats with high fur collars, while many had chosen leather coats with wool linings and thick scarves and woolly gloves wore much in evidence. Felt and velour hats and velvet toques were popular. Even the Afaori wahines .weer dressed for the occasion in gay I attire. * One smart and attractive tailored

costume seen was a moss green, with striped silk blouse in soft tonings of lighter green. The wearer had on a velour hat and shoes that exactly matched the costume, and the scarf that was jauntily tied in front in a bow was of the same material as the blouse. Another visitor wore a smart costume of Harris tweed in fawn tonings, the pale gold blouse and felt hat bringing out the touch of gold in the fleck of the material. Green wool boucle cloth, smartly cut, with soft grey fox fur collar, green patterned scarf and velour hat to match, was ano'ther striking ensemble seen.
