CHILLED BEEF

THE N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. BIG INTEREST TAKEN. Entries from all over the Dominion are expected for the New Zealand chilled beef championship, which is being promoted by the Wanganui Agricultural Association at the next show in November. “Cattle are being prepared in Gisborne, Hastings, and a number of places,’’ stated the president, Mr. R. Farley, at a meeeting of the association executive yesterday, “and that will not only help the championship itself, it vzill improve the show in other ways.” There was some discussion on the stipulation that the sire of a crossbred beast should be named. A member considered that many farmers would not know the sires- “Should that condition be insisted upon?” he asked. The secretary (Mr. Kenneth Armstrong) replied that the matter had been fully discussed by breeders, and in view of that the committee should hesitate to alter the conditions. The great value of the competition of this sort was that it gave an indication as to what breeds were the best. If the sire of a crossbred beast was not named, the fact could not be made known afterwards in the event of the carcase proving successful. Most of the value lay in ing able to declare what breeds provided the best beef. A Voice: What they are looking for is a competition between breeds. Let them have it. The recommendations regarding the championship were adopted. It was reported that the total prize money ran into £66. The major awards would be as under:— At On Hoof. Smithfield. First £5 £4O Second 22 Third 1 I £8 £43 The balance of the prize money would be awarded in the separate sections as specified in the schedule, entry in which automatically meant entry in the championship. Imlay Works are making special provisions to cope with the chilled beef trade. The question of appointing a judge arose, and the suggestion made by Mr. C. C- Baldwin was that a freezing works be approached with a view to obtaining a man with expert knowledge of the requirements of the trade. He pointed out that every breeder of cattle would want to participate in the championship and it behoved the association to obtain somebody in touch with the trade to do the judging. This matter was referred to the special Advisory Committee -with power to act. Mr. Hunter stated that facilities for judging the carcases at Imlay are being provided.
