Success of Bert Morris

A feature of the day’s ra-cing al , Hastings on Saturday was the riding j success of B. H. Morris, who brought ■ home the winner of all four fiat races I in which he was eligible to ride. Three j of his mounts were favourites, and the | other was second favourite. Price Paid for Easton. One English authority states that the price given by Lord Woolavington for the French-bred colt Easton after he had run second in the Two Thousand Guineas was £15,000, not £lO,OOO. It is generally accepted, however, that the smaller figure was what was given, and at that he was very nearly a cheap horse, for only Windsor Lad beat him in the Derby. Easton is attractively bred. He is by Dark Legend from the Phalaris mare Phaona, who was sent to the United States in 1932. Destination, dam of Phaona, was by Desmond from L’Etoile by Isinglass. L’Etoile was a sister to Star Shoot, who was exported to the United States, where he headed the winning sires’ list in 1911, 19.12. 1916, 19.17. and 1919. She is also t'hc dam of Eeouen, winner of £19,000 in stakes and an outstanding sire in Erance, getting the winners of 221 flat races and 200 hurdle races and steeplechases. Gaine Carrington. The fact that Gaine Carrington has not been nominated for the leading spring events leads to the assumption that the leg ailment which caused him to be eased right up in the early autumn has proved as serious as was feared. It is a matter for much regret that the New Zealand horse should be out of commission when so many important events are being run, for he won a place among the hist-raters by scoring in the Caullield Cup under 8.13 and creating an Australian and New Zealand record of 2.281 for a'mile and a-half.

Horses for Trentham. It has been decided that, providing the weights suit. Valpeen’s next start will be at the ‘Wellington winter meet ing next month. Valpeen is in great heart, and looks even improved since his racing at. Ellerslie. Another pair from Matamata who have been nominated for Wellington are Prince Vai and Royal Dance. The latter is a maiden three-year-old by Spear IDance from a marc by Valkyrian—Lady Marble and is thus stoutly bred. He has been in work for some months, and shows promise. Horse or Jockey? Some trainers take a horse to the races without arranging for a jockey. One of these days they will take a jockey to the races but forgot to arrange about the horse (comments ‘ 1 Sentinel.”) Gay Blonde’s Rest Over. Gay Blonde has resumed work nt Takanini after having spelled since the last Auckland Easter meeting. By sharing the honours with Burnish in the Champagne Stakes at that, fixture, she earned the right to be classed among Ihe best of this season’s juveniles, and to say the least there was no more consistent youngster racipg, as she weighed in on every occasion that she sported silk, and was a winner with as much as 10.0 to carry. Her future is regarded very hopefully, and she is in a bright and healthy condition to undertake a. preparation for early spring classic engagements. Winooka. Mr. A. J. Matthew, part-owner of Winooka. expressed surprise when informed of the reported decision of Air. Polson to return with the horse. He said that he had recently sent a cable message to Polson asking whether he considered it worth while continuing the American campaign with Winooka, who had struck himself in his last race. Polson had replied that the horse had recovered, and had suggested delaying a decision to return until after the Arlington Park meeting, which occupied 30 days from June.
