VALUE TO WANGANUI

EMPIRE ART COLLECTION. EXHIBITION IN SEPTEMBER ‘‘lt will be a fine thing for the city, both financially and from a cultural viewpoint,” remarked Air. Hope Gibbons, chairman of the board of trustees of the Wanganui Aluscum, yesterday at the monthly meeting when referring to the Empire Art Collection which will be shown in Wanganui during September. Air. Hope Gibbons said tl»et negotiations were proceeding satisfactorily and it was hoped that the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, might be present when the exhibition was opened in Wanganui for a period of three weeks. Air. Gibbons referred to the steps taken to have the collection brought to New Zealand. He said it would be shown at Christchurch, Wanganui and Auckland in addition to Dunedin, and would afterwards be taken to Australia. It was hoped that railway excursions could be arranged for to run from the surrounding centres, so it was likely that large numbers of people would come from the surrounding districts. Air. Hope Gibbons considered that the value of the exhibition would be reflected upon the museum, for visitors tb the city would also take the opportunity of inspecting it. They would ilsh have the opportunity of appreciating Wanganui’s fine trio of buildings, the Sarjeant Gallery, the museum and the public library, all of which Captain S. F. Markham, who had visited the Dominion representing the Carnegie Trust, had praised so highly.
