CITY WEIGHBRIDGE

ITS RETENTION AGREED TO Some time ago the Wanganui City Council decided to dispense with the city weighbridge. At a meeting last night that decision was revoked on tho voices, the council carrying a motion by Cr. J. Robertson, notice of which had been given, to rescind that then on the books. Cr. Robertson said that it had been demonstrated to the council that there was a need for the bridge. A deputation which had dealt with the matter had not suggested that it be dispensed with, but that ways and means be looked into with the idea of getting a decent bridge put in. Cr. J. D. Crowley seconded the motion to retain the bridge. He did so, he said, for the reason that the council now had information from the inspector g£ weights and measures that it could remain for a further year without the repairs which were mentioned at tint. The Alayor explained that the original letter from the department had been misread and the council was really not called upon for expenditure until next year. The test of whether the bridge should be retained, however, was whether it was patronised. In fact patronage of it was falling off. The speaker supported the motion to revoke the original decision, however. Crs. Liddells, Hill and O’Aleara supported the retention of the bridge. Cr. Hill hoped that some scheme would be framed by those who desired it retained whereby the expenditure would not be more than the revenue, which was the case at present, perhaps a part-time attendant would be necessary. Cr. O’Aleara said he hoped those who had waited as a deputation on the council would use the bridge now it was retained. Cr. Scott held that another Iccal body’s co-operation might be sought to share the expenses. Crs. G. I. Jones and A. E. Halligan were opposed to retaining tho bridge when it., accuracy had been questioned. The Alayor and Cr. Robertson pointed our, in reply to that point of view, that the bridge had been tested and adjustments made. Correct weights could be had from it. Cr. Robertson’s motion was carried on the voices.
