MAYOR ACTS FIRMLY TWO COUNCILLORS AFFECTED Two Wanganui City Councillors were directed to resume their seats last night when they fouled the Standing Orders. The Mayor (Mr. N. G. Armstrong) was very firm. Cr. J. Scott came up to “the barrier” first. His worry was to place before the Works Committee a letter from tho Gas Workers’ Union, asking for restoration of the 10 per cent, “cut.” “In face of the resolution carried at' the last meeting, I move that the letter be received,” stated the Afayor. Cr. Scott: “I move, as an amendment, that it go to the Works Committee.” The Mayor: You have to give notice of motion to rescind the other resolution before that can be done. I can’t allow any discussion. Cr. Scott: Well . . . The Mayor: Will you sit down, Cr. Scotti Cr. Scott (sitting down): I will give notice to rescind it. The Mayor: There must be no discussion. Cr. E. O’Aleara was the next aspirant to the honour of “hurdling” th? Standing Orders, but ho failed also. A milk-vendor, whose license had been cancelled, wrote asking that tho matter be reconsidered. The Mayor: We have a resolution on the books revoking that license, and until that is rescinded wo can’t deal with this letter. 1 move that it be received. You councillors can’t plav fast and loose with resolutions every meeting. Cr. O’Aleara: I am very sorry that— The. Mayor: Are you seconding the motion ? Cr. O’Meara (hurriedly): No, I am not. Cr. F. J. Hill: I seconded it. Cr. E. O’Meara: 1 would like to see the matter referred to the Works Committee. The Mayor: I can’t accept that, Cr. O’Aleara. Will you sit down? You are in tho same position as Cr. Scott was a moment ago. Cr. O’Aleara: I think . , . , The Afayor: I won’t hear you. Please sit down. Cr. O’Meara: I just want to explain that if I had known the procedure I would have given notice of motion. The Afayor (smiling): You should know tiie procedure. You can give notice if you want to. Cr. O’Aleara resumed his seat, signalising another victory for Standing Orders. The letter was received.
