TOURIST INTERESTS
MEETING AT THE HERMITAGE. [ Per Press Association. ] TIMARU, Dec. 4. Rcprcsenttaives of tourist interests, the Public Wores and Railway Departments, road transport and county councils, assembled at the Hermitage during the week-end. The gathering was the outcome of a similar function last year, when the South Island Tourist League was formed. The party, which numbered 100, visited Ball Hut and the Tasman Glacier, and also made trips to other points of interest. A number of speeches were made at the official dinner, the general tone being the need for the development of the tourist sense. Speakers emphasised that the South Island possessed attractions unequalled in the world, but there was a need for judicious advertising. Tourists at present were well catered for in the way of transport and accommodation, but the people wore taking things lying down. A visitor, Mr. A. F. Clayer. Trade Controller of Railways, Adelaide, paid a tribute to the New Zealand Railways, stating that thev were equal to anything in the world.
