GOLF NOTES. The first qualifying round ot the club ' championship was played last week-end under the best conditions we have had • for some weeks. The result was that the average standard of play was better , than it has ben for several years. In the senior grade there were nine scores under 90, whereas last year there were only four and the previous year only two. The local rule allowing to place playing No. 7 is still in force. No local is being made with reference to the netting fence on the right of No. 9 fairway. If a lift and drop is necessarvyou are penalised one stroke. When appteaching near the green, measure your distance if the pin is still in the hole. If your ball strikes the pin from within 20 yards, whether on the cut area or not, you are penalised two strokes in medal play. If you Strike your partner ’s ball under similar circumstances you aije penalised ono stroke. When in a bunker you cannot move anything to improve your lie. If you tee your ball in a bunker it costs you two strokes, or disqualification, if the strokes are not added to your score. If you play two consecutive shots with a wrong ball you are disqualified. MAJESTIC THEATRE. Joe E. Brown in “Fireman Save My Child,” conies to the Majestic to-day (Thursday). You will laugh till your sides ache when you see the antics of Joe E. Brown—the craziest fireman who ever donned a helmet. He gets into innumerable scrapes and does everything but execute Ms duties in the proper fashion. Assisting him in the film are Evelyn Knapp and Lilian Bond. There will be a matinee at 3.30 o’clock this afternoon. PERSONAL. Mr. F. J. Sexton, of the local staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his transfer to Eltham and leaves on Monday to assume his new duties. Mr. Gower, of Eltham will succeed him at Taihape.
