P. AND D.P.S.A.A A. There were many more entries than in previous years at the annual tournament for football and basketball held at the Patea Domain yesterday by the Patea and District Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association. Several schools in the district had entered teams in both football and basketball that had not taken part in tournaments before. The standard of play in both sections of football showed that the teams had been well trained in the rules of the game, and gave the large trowd of spectators a splndid day’s sport. Kohi, one of the teams who were taking part for the first time, won the senior division of the football, defeating Whenuakura after an exciting game. Whakamara, winners of last year’s tournament, once again, came out the winners in the junior division, defeating Whenuakura after a hard tussle. Tn the basketball. the two Patea schools, the Patea Public and the Patea Convent, fought out the issue for the winning honours, and the game proved verv close. At the conclusion of the tournament. Mr E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, presented the •cups for the three sections, and congratulated the winners on their success. Cheers were given for the winning teams, and also for the referees, committer and losers Following are the results of the different sections:— Senior Football. First Round.— Patea Convent 5. beat Manutahi 3; Kohi 25. heat Waverley 0. Second Round.—Whenuakura 3 Hat Patea Convent 0; Kohi 5, heat Tatea P. Final. —Kohi Whenuakura. From the kick-off. L. Oliver (Knhi) fielded a bail outside Whenuakura *s twenty-five, and fending off six tacklers, scored under tho posts. He converted the trv himself. L. Oliver Scored two more similar tries. The kick at goal for one failed, and for the other was successful. Knhi 13; Whenuakura 0. This was t v .e final score. Junior Football. First Round.— Patea A heat Patea Convent; Patea B heat Kakaramea; Whakamara beat Alton. Second Round. Hurleyville heat Waverley A: Waverley Convent bcai. Patea A: Whakamara heat Patea B; Waitotara heat, Waverlev B. Semi-final. Hurleyville 11. beat Waverley Convent 0;. Whakamara 5. beat. Waitotara 0. Final.—Whakamara heat Hurleyville. Whakamara had the benefit of the wind in the first spell and attacked immediatclv, getting to Hurleyville’s twenty-five. Thev got to the line eventuallv and Hurleyville were penalised, enabling Whakamara to goal. Whaka mara’s wing three-quarter fielded the hall at, half way and boat the defence in a fast run to scorn. The game concluded with no further addition to the score, however, resulting in a win for Whakamara. Basketball. First Round.— Patea Convent A 4, beat Patea B 2; Whenuakura 9, beat Manutahi 0; Patea A 10, beat Whakamara 2. Second Round. —Waverley A 4, beat Waitotara 3; Patea Convent 4, beat Waverley < 1; Patea A 5, beat Whenuakura 4; Kakaramea 2, beat Alton 0. Third Round. —Patea Convent 2, beat Waverley A 0; Patea A beat Kakaramea. Final. —Patea beat Patea Convent. This was a hard game, and gave some splendid exhibitions of the game. Defending by both teams was good, and prevented higher scores. The game Ment up and down the ground in great style, and each side scored in quick succession. At half-time the tfcore was 2—all, and with two minutes to go, the scores were 3—all. After strenuous play the ball went down to Patea Public’s territory, and E. Willis threw the winning goal, the whistle going a minute later, with a win for Patea Public, the scores standing at 4 —3.
