EDUCATION BOARD

THE MONTHLY MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS The Wanganui Education Board met yesterday, Mr E. F. Hemingway acting as chairman owing to the indisposition of Mr W. A. Collins, whose health was reported to be making such satisfactory progress that he hoped to return home from hospital to-day. The following members were present: Messrs W. Adams, J. Aitken, R. Dukeson, Tingey, J. K. Hornblow, and M. H. C-am. Mr A. E. Wilson wrote asking for reduction in the rent charged for the portion of tho Tawhero School site he was leasing. On the motion of Mr Aitken the amount was reduced from 12s 6d to 10s a week. The question of occupation of the school site at Crofton was referred to the chairman to deal with. The lease will expire before the next meeting. The Utiku Committee wrote asking for a reduction in the amount owing to the board in connection with the installation of a septic tank. It was decided not to accede to the request on the ground that it would create a precedent. It was decided to compliment the committee on the work being carried for the school. Mr R. Dukeson held that in the matter of tho account the board should hesitate before turning a good committee down, but the chairman pointed out that the board had no option in tho matter. Mr Tingey said that if the account was reduced as suggested the board would have to do the same thing for every committee hat was “hard up.” Tho matter of improving the road approach to the Carnarvon School was referred to the architect for report. The engineer to he Manawatu County Council, who had inspected tho road, reported that improvement could be made by widening the cutting..
