Busy Band The Queen Alexandra’s Own Band is to have a busy time during the coming fortnight. On Saturday afternoon it is to play at tne opening of the rowing season, which is to be held at the Wanganui Rowing Club’s shed. On the following Saturday it is to play at the opening of the Castlecliff baths, while on Labour Day it will journey to Waverley to play at the races. The band is in good fettle and is playing extremely well. Unemployment Returns from the Department of Labour at Wanganui show that during last wook there were 910 men registered in Wanganui as unemployed. Of that number 747 men were given work under the No. 5 scheme. The previous week 919 men were registered as unemployed, while 692 were given work, representing a decrease last week of nine men registered as unemployed with an increase of 55 men employed under the No. 5 scheme. During last week 49 men failed to report, 12 were given work under the No. 4a scheme and three under the No. 4b scheme. Awards and Agreements “Y’ou cannot enter into an agreement which is contrary to the conditions of the award,” said Air J. H. Salmon, S.AL, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Air L. Cohen had asked Air E. W. F. Goh ns, inspector of factories at Wanganui, whether the proprietor of a private boarding house could take in a person who came to him ami said that she had no money, and would he take her in on the understanding that she was to do certain work in repayment for board and lodging. Air Gohns said that such action could not be taken. 'l’he full wages for that work, as specified by the award, would have to be paid. The magistrate bore that assertion out.
