OLD VILLAGE FALLING IN

Brandon village in Durham, is falling in. It is an old village situated above the coalfields. It has been known for some time that the ground on which

the village ‘cottages are built was subsiding, and the cause is believed to be the collapse of au old disused coal seam below it.

At Easter, strange cracking noises were heard, and in July the warning took more positive form. The floors of four cottages began to sink and walls to gape. The families occupying them escaped just in time. No further risks are to be taken. All the cottages are to be given up, and the families will have to seek new homes.
