AUGUST IS BIRD MONTH

MESSAGE FROM MINISTER OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS In its endeavour to foster more interest and helpful thought among Qie general public, the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society is concentrating this month on bird protection. Its efforts arc cordially supported by the Minister for Internal Affairs (Hon. P. A. do la Perrelle) who has released for publication the following sympathetic message: “The New Zealander loves the native birds of his country and is keen to protect them. Recognising this, the New Zealand Native Bird Society has declar. cd August as ‘Bird Month’ and hopes to create in the New Zealand public a fuller bird-sense. “It is a fact that the native birds perform a most valuable service to the Dominion by destruction of insect pests. It is also a fact that in a severe winter such as this one is proving, large number.l of birds fail to survive the season. Therefore, the month chosen for fostering interest in the native fauna is an appropriate one. All New Zealanders will, I am sure, help. “As Minister of Internal Affairs looking after this branch of the Department’s functions, I desire to express my sympathy with the effort being made by the Bird Protection Society in its attempts to stir up further interest in our feathered friends and unique plant life.”
