A GIRL ASSAULTED

MAORI SENT TO GAOL. [ Per Press Asso-iiailox. ] CARTERTON, Dec. 6. In the Carterton Police Court this morning, before Justices of the Peace, a full-blooded Maori, Taukuriki Kopu, aged 27, commonly known as “Krooki,” was charged with assaulting a young Maori girl, aged 10, with intent to commit a crime. Evidence was given by the girl’s mother, sister, and brother. The girl’s mother is also a sister of Krooki. The Justices stated that they took a very serious view of the case, and sentenced Kopu to six months' hard labour.
