Gaolers Mystified
PRISONERS OBTAIN OPIUM PIGEONS BRING NARCOTIC ♦ [ Australian Press Assn. ] Received Sept 30, 11 p.m CONSTANTINOPLE, Sept. 30. Turkish authorities at Smyrna gaol, who have been baffled to know how prisoners have been constantly obtaining supplies of opium, kept watch and discovered that they had tamed pigeons which were nesting in the prison yard. They gave these birds to friends on regular weekly visiting days. The friends tied phials of opium beneath their wings and the birds homed with the precious luxury.
